FAMILY & CONSUMER SCIENCES 7-12

Grade 7

The student will be able to:
  1. Collaborate with peers and use decision-making skills to develop healthy lifestyles.
  2. Use proper equipment and kitchen language following safety and sanitation guidelines.
  3. Use recipes to prepare and serve food from various food groups.
  4. Identify and demonstrate proper table manners.
  5. Analyze food choices and demonstrate food consumerism.
  6. Explain the relationship of wellness to the nutritional value of food groups.
  7. Analyze menus and plan nutritious meals.

Grade 8

The student will be able to:
  1. Understand the importance of personal appearance in the development of a positive self-concept and becoming independent.
  2. Demonstrate the use of time management in completing projects.
  3. Interact with others in a positive way utilizing problem-solving skills.
  4. Develop hand and machine sewing skills while recognizing sewing terminology and techniques.
  5. Follow written instructions to complete an individual project.

Consumer Economics

The student will be able to:
  1. Analyze how lifestyles affect our consumer skills.
  2. Identify and justify consumer rights and responsibilities.
  3. Evaluate the effectiveness of advertising on consumer purchases.
  4. Make and evaluate successful purchases in the areas of food, clothing, appliances, and shelter.
  5. Examine investment and savings opportunities.
  6. Develop and apply a decision-making model to solve economic problems in individual and family settings.
  7. Explain the benefits of trade among individuals, families, businesses, and nations.

Interpersonal Relationships

The student will be able to:
  1. Understand and assess self-concepts.
  2. Identify basic human needs for a full-functioning person.
  3. Describe the process of building a relationship with family, acquaintances, and work peers.
  4. Apply the decision-making process to real-life situations.
  5. Describe the process of communication and its effectiveness in relationships.
  6. Identify the importance of good manners in all aspects of society.
  7. Access information about careers and occupations.

Nutrition and Wellness

The student will be able to:
  1. Analyze individual choices and their influence on daily lifestyles.
  2. Identify and illustrate the five nutrient groups and their impact on health and well being throughout the life cycle.
  3. Describe the categories of the Food Pyramid and the six Dietary Guidelines for
  4. Americans as they apply to food choices.
  5. Work safely and cooperatively with lab partners.
  6. Use various cooking methods to satisfy taste preference and nutritional values/needs.
  7. Prepare a wide variety of foods incorporating ethnic and regional specialties.
  8. Implement sanitation and meal management principles in planning and serving meals.
  9. Use socially acceptable behavior in a variety of dining situations.
  10. Explore and evaluate job and career opportunities related to food.

Adult Roles & Responsibilities

The student will be able to:
  1. Evaluate different lifestyles and legal aspects of adult responsibilities.
  2. Understand social, emotional, and psychological importance of adult roles.
  3. Examine various needs for adult living.
  4. Discuss the importance of positive communication in all aspects of living.
  5. Recognize income limitations and finance management.
  6. Assess the correlation of dating to a strong, successful relationship.
  7. Identify the advantages and disadvantages of various lifestyles.
  8. Understand the importance of positive communication within a close, personal relationship.
  9. Evaluate the importance of making healthy sexual decisions.

Child Development & Parenting

The student will be able to:
  1. Understand, identify, and evaluate the importance of prenatal care.
  2. List and incorporate physical, social, cognitive, and emotional development of all childhood stages.
  3. Describe the needs of physically and emotionally challenged children.
  4. Explore childcare career opportunities.
  5. Analyze the family lifecycle and determine the importance of strengthening families.
  6. Explore issues concerning prenatal development and consequences of teen pregnancy.
  7. Exhibit acceptable parenting skills in a child's life.
  8. Investigate various types of care giving for children.
  9. Identify the causes and prevention of child abuse.
