ESSENTIAL SKILLS

Grades 7 & 8: Essential English Skills

The student will be able to:
  1. Perform basic skills (sentence structure, paragraphs, punctuation, spelling, grammar, and vocabulary).
  2. Perform basic writing skills using correct grammar.
  3. Read frequently using student and teacher-selected materials (fiction, non-fiction, biographies, classics, newspapers, magazines, poetry and plays).
  4. Develop comprehension skills using a variety of reading materials.
  5. Think and read critically (infer, compare, contrast, predict, and generalize).
  6. Perform study skills (time management, organization, and agenda books).
  7. Use the media center and its resources.
  8. Communicate verbally in a variety of formal and informal settings.
  9. To interpret literature through creative expressions using drama and storytelling.

Grades 7 & 8: Essential Math Skills

The student will be able to:
  1. Perform basic whole number math computation (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division).
  2. Perform basic math computation (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) of integers, fractions and decimals.
  3. Understand place value in whole numbers and decimals.
  4. Apply math computations to life skills (sales tax, balancing a checkbook, sales, and discounts).
  5. Apply critical-thinking skills to word problems.
  6. Recognize the relationship between ratios, decimals, percentages, and solve proportions.
  7. Read, interpret, and present data in graph form.
  8. Identify basic geometric shapes and use formulas to work with perimeter, area and volume.
  9. Identify correct units of measurement (capacity, temperature, size, quantity, and passage of time).
  10. Utilize computers and calculators to accomplish computations.
