Grade 7
The student will be able to:
- Identify the parts of a sentence (subject, predicate).
- Understand and follow written and oral instructions.
- Employ the writing process (prewriting, writing, evaluation, editing, and publishing) for persuasive, expository, narrative, and descriptive writings.
- Organize paragraphs and develop three - five paragraph essays or reports using the Standard English conventions of spelling, usage, and mechanics.
- Write for pleasure and personal interests.
- Summarize and comprehend a broad variety of print and media sources.
- Analyze literature through an understanding of plot, character, and setting.
- Show mastery of selected spelling and vocabulary words.
- Compose and deliver speeches and dramatic presentations.
- Use media center for research and personal enjoyment.
Grade 8
The student will be able to:
- Master the parts of speech and phrases recognizing their purpose and function in writing.
- Understand and follow written and oral instruction.
- Review and utilize the writing process.
- Organize writing into three - five paragraph essays with a thesis statement and Standard
- English conventions of spelling, mechanics, and usage.
- Utilize journal writing for pleasure, personal interest, and organization of thought.
- Analyze literature using written expression and continue study of plot, theme, symbol and other applicable literary terms.
- Demonstrate correct mechanics and usage for Standard English by focusing on sentence combining and punctuation.
- Prepare and gather information for the purpose of organizing speeches and dramatic presentations.
- Classify, define, and use selected vocabulary words.
- Use the media center resources for research.
Grade 9
The student will be able to:
- Utilize the writing process to produce a persuasive essay.
- Incorporate transitions in five-paragraph essay.
- Identify and use various types of written expression.
- Use effective listening and speaking techniques.
- Use various reference sources to create outlines to organize thought and information.
- Classify, define, and use literary terms.
- Understand and appreciate a broad variety of literature.
- Classify, define and use selected vocabulary.
- Write logical directions (traveling or completing a process).
- Analyze the elements of story structure.
Grade 10
The student will be able to:
- Identify the various types of clauses and utilize them in written expression.
- Use research techniques, including MLA (Modern Language Association) documentation, to produce a written or oral project.
- Write business letters and memos using a variety of technical skills.
- Use the writing process to produce an expository essay.
- Read and understand literature written from different points of view.
- Analyze and demonstrate understanding of different literary genres.
- Classify, define, and use selected vocabulary words and their derivative forms.
- Use appropriate evidence to support the thesis of a five paragraph essay, utilizing standard spelling, usage, and mechanics.
- Utilize critical thinking and listening skills to identify and analyze cause/effect and comparison/contrast.
- Respond to literature through the use of journals and discussion.
Grade 11
The student will be able to:
- Recognize and use parallelism and rhetorical questions.
- Examine the regionalistic literature of the United States.
- Answer analytical questions using complete sentences and well-organized paragraphs.
- Write an original document (fiction or nonfiction) using the word processor.
- Revise personal writing for sentence structure, clear and concise verbs, adjectives, adverbs, and language mechanics.
- Write a comparison and contrast essay using two different methods of organization (Venn diagram, cluster).
- Recognize differences among the tall tale, journal entry, and novel.
- Recognize how literature is used to influence or reflect trends in American thought.
- Use all forms of communication skills in order to communicate effectively.
- Read and recognize the works of great American writers from different periods.
Grade 11-A
The student will be able to:
- Effectively use the five-step writing process in written assignments.
- Write a literary analysis.
- Recognize how literature is used to influence or reflect trends in American thought.
- Read and recognize work by great American writers.
- Use various sources to compose a written research paper relevant to America.
- Use all forms of communication skills in order to participate in a career shadowing experience with a community business or profession.
- Compose a portfolio containing expository, descriptive, creative, and summary writings by utilizing technology.
- Use all forms of communication skills in order to communicate effectively.
- Demonstrate skills of grammar, mechanics, vocabulary, spelling, and literary techniques through written and oral expression.
Grade 12
The student will be able to:
- Utilize the five-step writing process to produce expository, persuasive, descriptive, and narrative essays.
- Define and use selected vocabulary words and their derivatives.
- Improve oral communication skills and deliver an oral presentation.
- Write a research paper utilizing technology.
- Use standard grammar in written and oral communication.
- Understand and show the relationship of literature to life and human values.
- Demonstrate an understanding of literature and its corresponding history.
- Complete required individual book reports.
- Implement effective listening skills through note taking, paraphrasing, and summarizing.
Grade 12-A
The student will be able to:
- Make and defend judgements about quality and content of information, including information generated through technology.
- Write a paper that incorporates research, proofreading, revising, and utilizes technology.
- Write four types of essays (expository, persuasive, narrative, and descriptive).
- Demonstrate standard grammar usage and skills through written and oral expression.
- Define and use appropriate grade level vocabulary.
- Improve oral communication skills and deliver an oral presentation.
- Show the relationship of literature to life and human values in written and oral presentations.
- Demonstrate an understanding of literature and its corresponding history.
- Complete required individual book reports utilizing literary terminology.
