GRADE 5

Reading and Language Arts

The student will be able to:
  1. Learn comprehension skills while enjoying independent reading from the text and various literature books.
  2. Learn the eight parts of speech (noun, pronoun, verb, adjectives, adverb, prepositions, conjunction, and interjection) and how they are used in sentences to improve writing skills.
  3. Identify and apply the four kinds of sentences (declarative, interrogative, exclamatory, and imperative) and the correct punctuation for each.
  4. Organize complete sentences into a paragraph.
  5. Learn and apply dictionary skills (alphabetize, guide words, multiple meanings, base/root words).
  6. Comprehend grade level appropriate material (using cause/effect, fact/opinion, inferences, reality/fantasy and sequencing.
  7. Compose written works (by utilizing prewrite, draft, revision, peer sharing and editing).

Math

The student will be able to:
  1. Develop and apply reasoning skills.
  2. Communicate problem - solving skills orally and in writing.
  3. Reinforce an understanding of fractions and develop an understanding of percents, integers, and irrational numbers.
  4. Reinforce an understanding of the place-value system for whole numbers through hundred millions and decimal to the thousandths place.
  5. Develop proficiency with estimation.
  6. Develop measurement skills using standard and metric systems.
  7. Develop an understanding of geometric terms (parallel, perpendicular, and intersecting lines; polygons, symmetry, angles and line segments) and algebraic concept processes (variable).
  8. Compute and apply whole numbers, decimals, and fractions using addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
  9. Know times tables through twelve.

Science

The student will be able to:
  1. Practice and apply map skills (latitude, longitude, intermediate cardinal directions).
  2. Construct and interpret time lines, charts, and graphs.
  3. Have knowledge of the events leading to the founding of our country.
  4. Understand the principles behind U.S. historical documents (Declaration, Constitution, Bill of Rights, Emancipation Proclamation).
  5. Understand our electoral process and the three branches of government.
  6. Understand the melting pot concept.
  7. Have basic knowledge of the chronological order of major U.S. historical events.

Health

The student will be able to:
  1. Have an understanding of how drugs and alcohol affect the mind and body.
  2. Have an understanding of injury prevention and basic first aid.
  3. Have an understanding of how exercise is beneficial to personal health.
  4. Explain how nutrition affects growth and development of the human body.
  5. Develop an understanding of the major body systems (respiratory, circulatory, nervous, digestive, muscular, and skeletal).
  6. Have an understanding of human growth and development from conception to adulthood.
  7. Have an understanding of HIV and other communicable diseases.
  8. Have an understanding of the importance of emotional and social health.

Art

The student will be able to:
  1. Identify and compare subject matter, styles, ideas and influences within various works of art.
  2. Recognize and use the elements and principles of design within artworks.
  3. Identify and describe artwork demonstrating various styles (representational, abstract, objective, and non-objective).
  4. Use technology to explore and create artwork.
  5. Portray depth by using one-point perspective.
  6. Utilize and convey understanding of color.
  7. Develop knowledge of proportion through portrait drawing.
  8. Use a variety of media and techniques to create two-dimensional and three-dimensional works.
  9. Demonstrate responsibility in the use, care, and clean up of materials.
  10. Develop a sense of pride and self-satisfaction by creating works of art to the best of his/her ability.

Music

The student will be able to:
  1. Appreciate and enjoy a variety of musical styles.
  2. Recognize and perform eighth, quarter, dotted quarter, half, dotted half, and whole notes, as well as quarter, half, and whole rests
  3. Aurally recognize soprano, alto, tenor, and bass voices.
  4. Identify major and minor tonalities.
  5. Recognize thick or thin textures both visually and aurally.
  6. Recognize AB, ABA, AABA, rondo, theme/variations, and fugue both visually and aurally.
  7. Relate words and mood to style of performance.
  8. Perform music with appropriate tempo, dynamics, attacks, releases, and phrasing.
  9. Identify four different composers and their music.
  10. Demonstrate basic skills through a public performance.

Computers

The student will be able to:
  1. Reinforce computer skills (cut, copy, paste, underline, center, font and page set-up).
  2. Develop keyboarding skills for speed and accuracy.
  3. Reinforce Internet skills.
  4. Utilize software design to develop and reinforce content area skills, begin use of Cornerstone B.
  5. Use software programs to create and interpret charts, spreadsheets, and databases.
  6. Find and use the calculator.
  7. Create newsletters.

Nurse

The student will be able to:
  1. Understand and demonstrate personal hygiene and hand-washing concepts.
  2. Identify lice prevention strategies (sharing combs, hats, and coats).
  3. Recognize prevention strategies as needs are identified (repeated visits to clinic for treatment of injuries).
  4. Exhibit general cleanliness (brush hair and teeth, wear clean clothes).
  5. Understand medical conditions of students in grade level and obtain appropriate assistance (asthma, diabetes, heart conditions).
  6. Comply with appropriate immunizations required by state law.
  7. Demonstrate responsibility to report to the health room at scheduled times for administration of medications and/or treatment procedure.
  8. Express general symptoms of illness/injury for appropriate referral.
  9. Understand concepts presented in social health program (emotional and physical changes of body during maturation).
  10. Participate in scoliosis screening.
