GRADE 3
Reading and Language Arts
The student will be able to:
- Read materials to gather information using a variety of resources for the purpose of enjoyment, enrichment, and research purposes.
- Apply appropriate decoding skills and use context clues in a variety of ways.
- Apply appropriate reading strategies and reading comprehension skills.
- Organize and utilize the writing process to compose and write a grammatically correct short story on a specific topic.
- Write using a variety of formats (personal narratives, friendly letters, directions, descriptions, lists, and journals).
- Successfully apply spelling strategies in all subject areas.
- Improve expression and fluency through oral reading.
- Apply knowledge of word usage and parts of speech (noun, pronoun, verb, adjective, adverb) in their oral and written expression.
- Recognize the elements of a story.
- Demonstrate appropriate knowledge of punctuation and sentence structure.
Math
The student will be able to:
- Count, compare, order, round, and estimate numbers through ten thousands or hundred thousands.
- Formulate and solve addition and subtraction problems through thousands utilizing regrouping and estimating.
- Introduce multiplication and division facts through nine.
- Apply problem-solving skills in sequential steps.
- Apply measurement skills (time, money, standard, metric, and nonstandard units).
- Apply geometric math skills including symmetry, congruency, shapes, lines, line segments, rays, planes, and points.
- Identify, name, and write a fraction through a given illustration or model.
- Interpret and apply data from graphs and charts.
Science
The student will be able to:
- Explain the orbit, rotation, and revolution of the solar system in creating our calendar.
- Diagram the water cycle.
- Explain how matter changes from solid, liquid, or gas.
- Discuss the basic needs and characteristics of all living things.
- Develop a food chain model using four to five links.
- Show a relationship between energy, heat, and light including natural and electric energy.
Social Studies
The student will be able to:
- Identify the officials in a community government, their responsibilities, and services provided.
- Compare and contrast changes in the local community from the past to the present and make predictions for the future.
- Identify land and water forms on a map and/or globe.
- Use a compass rose and map key to locate specific locations on a map.
- Locate the continents, equator, poles, and hemispheres on a map or globe.
- Locate their community in relationship to their state/country and compare/contrast cultures around the world.
- Compare the climate of the community with the rest of the nation and world.
- Distinguish between goods and services to meet the basic needs of the community.
- Gather data and construct graphs, charts, and timelines.
- Use various sources of information to identify important events and issues in the community.
Health
The student will be able to:
- Make healthy food choices.
- Name the six food nutrients and six food groups important to good health.
- Explain the process and function of digestion.
- Distinguish between substances that help the body grow and those that are harmful to growth and development.
- Identify how to prevent the spread of communicable diseases.
- Describe how emotions can be expressed and how they may affect a person physically.
Art
The student will be able to:
- Identify visual clues within works of art from different cultures and time periods.
- Examine and discuss artwork by six or more artists using art vocabulary.
- Identify and use the elements and principles of design in both two-dimensional and three-dimensional artworks.
- Demonstrate an understanding of both symmetrical and asymmetrical balance within their artwork.
- Employ techniques to create the illusion of three-dimensional space (shading, size, overlapping, foreground, middle ground, and background).
- Recognize and discuss the role of art in our community.
- Identify and use warm, cool, and neutral colors to express feelings and/or moods.
- Demonstrate responsibility in the use, care and clean up of materials.
- Develop a sense of pride and self-satisfaction by creating works of art to the best of his/her ability.
- Use technology to explore and create artwork.
Music
The student will be able to:
- Appreciate and enjoy a variety of musical styles.
- Recognize and perform eighth, quarter, half, dotted half, and whole notes, and quarter rests.
- Recognize and define musical phrases.
- Understand the use of time signatures, bar lines, and measures.
- Identify the four families of musical instruments and examples of each.
- Recognize and demonstrate various rhythm patterns.
- Perform an ostinato pattern to create harmony.
- Explore our heritage and culture through American folk songs.
- Learn about other countries through ethnic folk songs.
- Demonstrate basic skills through a public performance.
Computers
The student will be able to:
- Expand computer related vocabulary (files, folders, and network).
- Use a writing program to create, edit, save, and print a story, adding available pictures and graphics.
- Use spell check as a tool for editing written work.
- Review home row and introduce full keyboard.
- Use content software to reinforce and extend the learning of basic skills, continuing Cornerstone A.
- Utilize software for research purposes (encyclopedia, timelines).
Nurse
The student will be able to:
- Understand and participate in hand-washing techniques as taught in first and second grades.
- Identify lice prevention strategies (not sharing combs, hats, and coats).
- Recognize prevention strategies as needs are identified (repeated visits to clinic for treatment of injuries).
- Participate in vision screening with appropriate follow-up.
- Exhibit general cleanliness (brush hair and teeth, wear clean clothes).
- Understand medical conditions of students in grade level and obtain appropriate assistance (asthma, diabetes, heart conditions).
- Comply with appropriate immunizations required by state law.
- Demonstrate responsibility to report to the health room at scheduled times for administration of medications and/or treatment procedure.
- Express general symptoms of illness/injury for appropriate referral.
