GRADE 3

Reading and Language Arts

The student will be able to:
  1. Read materials to gather information using a variety of resources for the purpose of enjoyment, enrichment, and research purposes.
  2. Apply appropriate decoding skills and use context clues in a variety of ways.
  3. Apply appropriate reading strategies and reading comprehension skills.
  4. Organize and utilize the writing process to compose and write a grammatically correct short story on a specific topic.
  5. Write using a variety of formats (personal narratives, friendly letters, directions, descriptions, lists, and journals).
  6. Successfully apply spelling strategies in all subject areas.
  7. Improve expression and fluency through oral reading.
  8. Apply knowledge of word usage and parts of speech (noun, pronoun, verb, adjective, adverb) in their oral and written expression.
  9. Recognize the elements of a story.
  10. Demonstrate appropriate knowledge of punctuation and sentence structure.

Math

The student will be able to:
  1. Count, compare, order, round, and estimate numbers through ten thousands or hundred thousands.
  2. Formulate and solve addition and subtraction problems through thousands utilizing regrouping and estimating.
  3. Introduce multiplication and division facts through nine.
  4. Apply problem-solving skills in sequential steps.
  5. Apply measurement skills (time, money, standard, metric, and nonstandard units).
  6. Apply geometric math skills including symmetry, congruency, shapes, lines, line segments, rays, planes, and points.
  7. Identify, name, and write a fraction through a given illustration or model.
  8. Interpret and apply data from graphs and charts.

Science

The student will be able to:
  1. Explain the orbit, rotation, and revolution of the solar system in creating our calendar.
  2. Diagram the water cycle.
  3. Explain how matter changes from solid, liquid, or gas.
  4. Discuss the basic needs and characteristics of all living things.
  5. Develop a food chain model using four to five links.
  6. Show a relationship between energy, heat, and light including natural and electric energy.

Social Studies

The student will be able to:
  1. Identify the officials in a community government, their responsibilities, and services provided.
  2. Compare and contrast changes in the local community from the past to the present and make predictions for the future.
  3. Identify land and water forms on a map and/or globe.
  4. Use a compass rose and map key to locate specific locations on a map.
  5. Locate the continents, equator, poles, and hemispheres on a map or globe.
  6. Locate their community in relationship to their state/country and compare/contrast cultures around the world.
  7. Compare the climate of the community with the rest of the nation and world.
  8. Distinguish between goods and services to meet the basic needs of the community.
  9. Gather data and construct graphs, charts, and timelines.
  10. Use various sources of information to identify important events and issues in the community.

Health

The student will be able to:
  1. Make healthy food choices.
  2. Name the six food nutrients and six food groups important to good health.
  3. Explain the process and function of digestion.
  4. Distinguish between substances that help the body grow and those that are harmful to growth and development.
  5. Identify how to prevent the spread of communicable diseases.
  6. Describe how emotions can be expressed and how they may affect a person physically.

Art

The student will be able to:
  1. Identify visual clues within works of art from different cultures and time periods.
  2. Examine and discuss artwork by six or more artists using art vocabulary.
  3. Identify and use the elements and principles of design in both two-dimensional and three-dimensional artworks.
  4. Demonstrate an understanding of both symmetrical and asymmetrical balance within their artwork.
  5. Employ techniques to create the illusion of three-dimensional space (shading, size, overlapping, foreground, middle ground, and background).
  6. Recognize and discuss the role of art in our community.
  7. Identify and use warm, cool, and neutral colors to express feelings and/or moods.
  8. Demonstrate responsibility in the use, care and clean up of materials.
  9. Develop a sense of pride and self-satisfaction by creating works of art to the best of his/her ability.
  10. Use technology to explore and create artwork.

Music

The student will be able to:
  1. Appreciate and enjoy a variety of musical styles.
  2. Recognize and perform eighth, quarter, half, dotted half, and whole notes, and quarter rests.
  3. Recognize and define musical phrases.
  4. Understand the use of time signatures, bar lines, and measures.
  5. Identify the four families of musical instruments and examples of each.
  6. Recognize and demonstrate various rhythm patterns.
  7. Perform an ostinato pattern to create harmony.
  8. Explore our heritage and culture through American folk songs.
  9. Learn about other countries through ethnic folk songs.
  10. Demonstrate basic skills through a public performance.

Computers

The student will be able to:
  1. Expand computer related vocabulary (files, folders, and network).
  2. Use a writing program to create, edit, save, and print a story, adding available pictures and graphics.
  3. Use spell check as a tool for editing written work.
  4. Review home row and introduce full keyboard.
  5. Use content software to reinforce and extend the learning of basic skills, continuing Cornerstone A.
  6. Utilize software for research purposes (encyclopedia, timelines).

Nurse

The student will be able to:
  1. Understand and participate in hand-washing techniques as taught in first and second grades.
  2. Identify lice prevention strategies (not sharing combs, hats, and coats).
  3. Recognize prevention strategies as needs are identified (repeated visits to clinic for treatment of injuries).
  4. Participate in vision screening with appropriate follow-up.
  5. Exhibit general cleanliness (brush hair and teeth, wear clean clothes).
  6. Understand medical conditions of students in grade level and obtain appropriate assistance (asthma, diabetes, heart conditions).
  7. Comply with appropriate immunizations required by state law.
  8. Demonstrate responsibility to report to the health room at scheduled times for administration of medications and/or treatment procedure.
  9. Express general symptoms of illness/injury for appropriate referral.
