GRADE 2

Reading and Language Arts

The student will be able to:
  1. Communicate effectively through speaking, listening, and writing.
  2. Read and comprehend written text through words and pictures (main idea, setting, character, and plot).
  3. Apply phonic skills to decode unknown words (beginning, middle, and final consonants, consonant clusters, digraphs, and short and long vowels in a single syllable words, diphthongs).
  4. Use appropriate forms of written language.
  5. Read for enjoyment.
  6. Write for enjoyment (journals, letters, cards, and short stories).
  7. Form cursive lower and upper case letters correctly.
  8. Improve expression and fluency through oral reading.
  9. Introduce the concepts of suffix, prefix, synonyms, and antonyms.

Math

The student will be able to:
  1. Add up to 2 digits with regrouping as used to master addition and subtraction facts up to eighteen. Subtract up to 2 digits without regrouping.
  2. Master place value from 1 to 999 (pattern numbers and shapes, estimating numbers).
  3. Properly use life skill measurements (inches, gallons, pints, time to 5 minutes, grouping and value of coins to $1).
  4. Identify and illustrate fractions (halves, thirds, fourths).
  5. Identify solid shapes (sphere, cube, pyramid, cylinder, cone, rectangular prism).
  6. Solve basic addition and/or subtraction word problems.
  7. Identify and correctly use math symbols (+, -, =, > , < ).
  8. Identify and properly use patterns and numbers on a number chart (even/odd numbers, patterns of 5, and groups of 3/4).
  9. Become familiar with calculators and computers.
  10. Gather and interpret data from bar, pie, and line graphs.

Science

The student will be able to:
  1. Observe the interaction of plants and animals in their habitats.
  2. Use simple measuring instruments to observe and compare.
  3. Describe the interdependence and relationship between living and nonliving systems.
  4. Briefly describe 3 states of matter (solid, liquid, gas).

Social Studies

The student will be able to:
  1. Know how to write full name, phone number, and address.
  2. Apply thinking and decision-making using life skills.
  3. Distinguish the difference between neighborhood and community.
  4. Understand and develop an awareness of careers, cultural events, and special calendar events.
  5. Understand basic map skills (four directions, compass rose, landforms, and map key).
  6. Understand the relationship of goods, services, needs, and wants.

Health

The student will be able to:
  1. Name the five senses and explain the role of each (ear, eye, skin, tongue, nose).
  2. Know the components of a healthy lifestyle.
  3. Understand how individual health behaviors affect illness and wellness.
  4. Understand his/her uniqueness and express appropriate feelings.
  5. Briefly describe the major internal organs and bones.

Art

The student will be able to:
  1. Explore works of art to make comparisons, develop appreciation, and discuss subject matter.
  2. Examine artwork by four or more artists to discover if it is old, new, realistic, or abstract.
  3. Discuss artwork using an expanded art vocabulary.
  4. Utilize and identify the elements of line, color, shape, texture, space, pattern and balance within artwork.
  5. Identify and mix secondary colors.
  6. Explore the use of technology as it applies to art.
  7. Use a variety of drawing and painting media (crayons, chalk, markers, pencils, and paints) to express personal ideas and feelings.
  8. Experiment with mixed media (collage, tissue, and clays) using printmaking, sculpting, and weaving techniques.
  9. Demonstrate responsibility in the use, care, and clean up of materials.
  10. Develop a sense of pride and self-satisfaction by creating works of art to the best of his/her ability.

Music

The student will be able to:
  1. Appreciate and enjoy a variety of musical styles.
  2. Recognize and identify melodies that are the same or different.
  3. Identify steps, leaps, and repeats in music.
  4. Identify meter in two or three.
  5. Recognize and perform eighth, quarter, and half notes, as well as quarter rests.
  6. Sing simple rounds or put two songs together simultaneously.
  7. Identify AB and ABA forms.
  8. Recognize dynamic levels.
  9. Follow musical directions, or road maps (repeats, first and second endings, and multiple verses).
  10. Demonstrate basic skills through a public performance.

Computers

The student will be able to:
  1. Expand computer-related vocabulary (disk drive, floppy disk).
  2. Write short stories on computer and learn how to save, retrieve and print.
  3. Introduce Cornerstone program to further language arts and mathematical skills.
  4. Utilize font, size, style, and text on the toolbar.
  5. Identify home row keys and the concept of key placement.
  6. "Log-on" to the network and choose a program.
  7. Use software for manipulatives, creativity, music, simulations, and problem solving.
  8. Start and properly shutdown a computer.

Nurse

The student will be able to:
  1. Understand and participate in hand-washing techniques as shown in hand washing video.
  2. Identify lice prevention strategies (not sharing combs, hats, and coats).
  3. Recognize strategies as needs are identified (repeated visits to clinic for treatment of injuries).
  4. Exhibit general cleanliness (brush hair and teeth, wear clean clothes).
  5. Understand medical conditions of students in grade level and obtain appropriate assistance (asthma, diabetes, heart conditions).
  6. Comply with appropriate immunizations required by state law.
  7. Demonstrate responsibility to report to the health room at scheduled times for administration of medications and/or treatment procedure.
  8. Express general symptoms of illness/injury for appropriate referral.
