GRADE 1

Reading and Language Arts

The student will be able to:
  1. Apply phonetic analysis skills in word recognition (beginning, middle, and final consonants, consonant clusters, digraphs, and short and long vowel sounds in single syllable words).
  2. Apply structural analysis skills, including compound words, contractions, and plurals. Apply skills that demonstrate an understanding of story meanings (identification of details, main ideas, sequencing, making predictions, and orally answering comprehension questions).
  3. Understand the difference between reality/fantasy and cause/effect relationships.
  4. Demonstrate listening skills and the ability to follow directions.
  5. See and hear likenesses and differences among letters, sounds, and words.
  6. Demonstrate increasing vocabulary proficiency through word recognition skills and context clues written within words and sentences.
  7. Read silently and orally regularly for uninterrupted periods of time.
  8. Develop written and oral expressions in a variety of ways (journal, creative writing, stories, and creative dramatics).
  9. Write simple sentences using accepted spelling, punctuation, and capitalization.

Math

The student will be able to:
  1. Recognize, count, and write numerals 0 to 100 by 1's, 2's, 5's, 10's.
  2. Identify and recognize simple fractions (1/2, 1/3, 1/4).
  3. Recall addition and subtraction facts to 10.
  4. Identify and count combinations of pennies, nickels, and dimes.
  5. Identify basic geometric shapes (circles, squares, triangle, diamond, and rectangles).
  6. Identify time to the hour and half-hour.
  7. Construct and interpret real and picture graphs.
  8. Identify place value 1 to 99, write and compute 2-digit numbers with no regrouping.
  9. Solve story problems using manipulatives and estimation skills.
  10. Identify and copy picture and number patterns.

Science

The student will be able to:
  1. Name and use the five senses to classify, identify, and describe.
  2. Use simple experiments to learn about measurements, observations and comparisons.
  3. Identify and describe life cycles of plants (tree, apple and pumpkinseed).
  4. Observe and participate in simple experiments to verify data.
  5. Describe living and nonliving systems.

Social Studies

The student will be able to:
  1. Identify, describe, and draw models of the school and/or places in the community.
  2. Explain how the basic needs of food, shelter, and clothing are met.
  3. Identify, describe, role-play, and share with others about their self, family, friends, and community.
  4. Identify, suggest reasons for, and apply rules that exist in the family, school, and community.
  5. Discuss current events as it relates to self, family, and school (Martin Luther King Jr.'s, Independence, President's, Memorial, and Veteran's Days).
  6. Use a variety of resources including electronic print media to gather and organize information.

Health

The student will be able to:
  1. Identify themselves as an unique individual and demonstrate acceptance of differences in others.
  2. Identify members of the family.
  3. Demonstrate daily health habits that promote growth (hygiene, nutrition, and exercise).
  4. Identify and describe substances that are helpful and harmful to our bodies.
  5. Identify safety risks in the home, school, and community and participate in precautionary measures.
  6. Practice ways to keep the environment clean.

Art

The student will be able to:
  1. Recognize and discuss artwork least three different artists.
  2. Create works of art that express personal ideas, experiences, and feelings.
  3. Identify and differentiate between primary/secondary colors, geometric/organic shapes, and tactile/visual texture.
  4. Identify and use line, shape, color, texture, space, and pattern.
  5. Create two-dimensional works using crayon, markers, colored pencils, paints, and collage materials.
  6. Create various three-dimensional works using construction paper, poster board, clay, and/or dough.
  7. Understand that various cultures use art in their traditions, celebrations, and festivals.
  8. Demonstrate responsibility in the use, care and clean up of materials.
  9. Develop a sense of pride and self-satisfaction by creating works of art to the best of his/her ability.

Music

The student will be able to:
  1. Appreciate and enjoy a variety of musical styles.
  2. Feel and demonstrate a steady beat by clapping, marching, and playing rhythm instruments.
  3. Illustrate awareness of high and low pitch.
  4. Recognize melodies going upward and downward.
  5. Recognize the different tempos and identify changes in tempo.
  6. Perform simple and appropriate movement to songs.
  7. Recognize the sound of common band and orchestra instruments.
  8. Recognize music as a means of expressing emotions.
  9. Distinguish and imitate long and short sounds.
  10. Demonstrate basic skills through a public performance.

Computers

The student will be able to:
  1. Expand computer-related vocabulary (cursor, software, hardware, and drag).
  2. Insert and eject disk from CD-ROM and return to case.
  3. Classify and problem-solve working with patterns and shapes.
  4. Use arrow and shift keys.
  5. Reinforce eye-hand coordination when using mouse to draw or paint detailed pictures.
  6. Learn different methods for exiting software programs.
  7. Use software to reinforce reading, language, math, and science knowledge.
  8. Find and use volume and screen brightening buttons.

Nurse

The student will be able to:
  1. Understand hand-washing concepts learned through the Scrubbie Bear Program.
  2. Identify lice prevention strategies (not sharing combs, hats, and coats).
  3. Recognize strategies as needs are identified (repeated visits to clinic for treatment of injuries).
  4. Exhibit general cleanliness (brush hair and teeth, wear clean clothes).
  5. Understand medical conditions of students in grade level and obtain appropriate assistance (asthma, diabetes, heart conditions).
  6. Participate in Modified Clinical Technique vision screening.
  7. Understand and demonstrate appropriate dental hygiene.
  8. Comply with appropriate immunizations required by state law.
  9. Demonstrate responsibility to report to the health room at scheduled times for administration of medications and/or treatment procedure.
  10. Express general symptoms of illness/injury for appropriate referral.
